Simple Car Care Tips
  • Change the oil and filter regularly, every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

  • Have all fluids checked, including brake, power steering, transmission/transaxle, antifreeze, and windshield washer solvent.  These fluids play a large role in the safety and performance of the vehicle.

  • Check tire inflation.  Under-inflated tires can result in a loss of fuel efficiency.  This is the least expensive form of preventive and safety maintenance.  Tires should be checked once a month.

  • Keep your engine tuned. A fouled spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent.

  • Check battery cables and posts for corrosion and clean them as needed.  The battery fluid should also be checked and filled if it is low, except in the case of maintenance-free batteries.

  • Have the lighting system checked frequently, including headlights, turn signals, and brake and tail lights.

  • Check windshield washer blades for cracks, tears and windshield contact.  Replace them approximately once a year or sooner if streaking begins.

  • Inspect engine belts regularly.  Look for cracks and missing sections or segments.  Replace the belts if they are cracked or worn.

  • Have the air filtration system checked frequently. The air filter should be checked approximately every other oil change for clogging or damage. This includes the cabin air filter that cleans the air inside the passenger compartment.

Lowell's Toyota Tidbits

Less expensive Prius...  Toyota said recently it would introduce a new "standard" version of the Prius for the 2008 model year with a base price of $20,950, not including destination charges. That's 5.5%, or $1,225, less than the lowest-cost 2007 model.

Tundra crew cab tops all...  A leading consumer magazine recently ranked the Tundra first overall among full-size crew-cab trucks, narrowly edging out the Chevrolet Silverado.  The Tundra received a score of "Very Good" overall.

How many zeros is that?...  The 2nd quarter of 2007 was Toyota's best quarter ever.  Overall net profit was $4.1 billion, marking a 32% increase over the same quarter last year.

A regular feature in Lowell's Toyota Times

This month's recipe comes to us from Donna McClanahan, a long-time customer of ours.  She says, "This sauce is wonderful. You can put it on everything from asparagus to steak.  When I make the sauce I always double the recipe.  It goes so fast that after one meal it's gone.  So I double it.  You can also use light mayonnaise and light butter.  Be sure to use mayonnaise and not Miracle Whip."

Horseradish sauce

1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 TBSP Margarine melted
1 TBSP prepared horseradish (use more or less to taste)
1 TBSP grated onion
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dry mustard
pinch of white pepper

Combine and chill.  "It's one of those things that's better the next day," Donna says, "but I have used it immediately after making. It's good on baked potatoes also.  Once you try this you can put it on anything."

If you have a recipe you'd like to share, send it to us at lowells@iglou.com.
