Hello,

As you know, we have been in business since 1979, giving us the opportunity to hire and get to know many interesting individuals.  Michael Sommer, whom many of you may know, is one of our former service writers of which we are very proud.  After many years of study, Michael will be ordained a Rabbi at a ceremony at the Plum Street Temple in Cincinnati.

Michael has had many interesting and diverse jobs (other than here at Lowell’s) - disc jockey, Thoroughblades hockey team cheerleader (the Ice Patrol), web designer for Orbitz, and health magnet salesman.

Michael’s undergraduate degree was in drama.  I‘m sure this background will help make for many an interesting sermon.  We are very proud of Michael, and wish him, his wife Phyllis (also a Rabbi), and their son David all our best.

Thanks for reading,
Lowell & Betty

Lowell's Technicians Getting Smarter

Lowell’s recently had three technicians attend the Vision Hi-Tech Training & Expo, a three-day event for automotive technicians and owners held in Kansas City.  Amy, Jesse, and Keith attended seminars to sharpen their abilities in diagnosing and repairing Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

On the first day all three technicians attended “Fuelish Tips”, a seminar covering (you guessed it!) fuel system problems.

On day two Amy attended “Diagnostics 101”, while Jesse and Keith attended “Work Smarter by Being Smarter”.

With their brains nearly full, day three found Amy and Jesse in “Introduction to Lab Scopes”, while Keith squeezed in more information on “Diagnosing Air/Fuel Sensors”.

This is the largest automotive training event in the Midwest.  In addition to the teaching seminars, over 80 vendors displayed exhibits, showcasing the latest tools and equipment for car repair.

Top 10 indicators that gas prices are too high...

  1. A fill-up costs $20...and that's just the gas can for your lawn mower.
  2. A bank loan officer has set up a temporary office in the gas station.
  3. A gallon of milk is cheaper than a gallon of gas.
  4. A gallon of paint is cheaper than a gallon of gas.
  5. A gallon of uranium is cheaper than a gallon of gas.
  6. Your teenage son asks, "Hey, Dad, can I borrow $150 to fill up the tank?"
  7. Arnold Schwarzenegger sells his Hummer and buys a compact car.
  8. Fort Knox trades the gold for gas.
  9. When asked to explain the high price of gas, the gas companies now state, "Because we can, that's why!"
  10. You tell your children that you can remember when gas was below a dollar...and they don't believe you.

Parts Manager Makes Most of Mid-Winter Meeting

Lowell's Parts Manager, Clay, recently traveled to Bradenton, Florida for a seminar held by Pace Computer Company.  Pace wrote the shop management program that we use here at Lowell’s.  The seminar was designed to educate users on key features of the program, as well as address some of the issues and questions that arise with daily use of the program.

Various topics included invoicing, inventory, marketing, and generating reports.  Clay gleaned useful tips and ideas from the seminar and enjoyed meeting Pace's technical support staff in person.  It was also nice waking up to 68-degree weather when it was snowing back in Lexington!

Clay met several people from other areas of the country while at the seminar.  Even though Bradenton (south of Tampa) is a long way from Lexington, the award for the longest trip to get there went to a shop owner from Saskatchewan, Canada.  He was thankful for the warm weather, too!

Lowell's Toyota Tidbits

Hybrid notes...  Toyota's president recently said that the company aims to sell one million hybrid vehicles a year.  No timeframe for the lofty ambition was mentioned, however he also said their goal is to move 300,000 hybrids worldwide either this year or next.

That's fast!...  Speaking of hybrids, the new Highlander and Lexus RX 400h boast 0-60 mph times of 7.3 seconds.  Not bad for SUVs that get better fuel mileage than smaller, lighter passenger cars!

Safety first...  The restyled GS 300 scored tops in its division in crash performance in the Euro NCAP (a European safety assessment program), as well as best in its division in the frontal collision test.  Overall, the new Lexus earned a five-star rating.

"Airbag is now deploying...also, will that be Bach or the Beatles...?"  Toyota recently announced an improved GPS-based telecommunications system, similar to GM's OnStar system.  The system can call an ambulance when an airbag opens, send a mobile phone message if a door is left unlocked, and even play one of over 10,000 songs stored on the system's hard drive!  The system is currently in use in Japan only.

Priuses rolling into Frankfort...  Kentucky's secretary for the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet recently announced that the state is adding four Priuses to the Cabinet's fleet.  She said, "Governor Fletcher pledged to make state government more efficient, and the use of hybrid vehicles is just one example of that commitment in action."
